A new breed of ‘hammerman’ – hammerwoman. War made challenging demands on the people, sending women into traditional ‘male-only’ territories. Second World War recruit Mrs Phyllis Saunders left her sewing job in a raincoat factory and was sent to work on this 20cwt hammer in the Blacksmith’s. Only for the wartime, of course – it was thought, but some came back after the war and stayed until the mid-1950s.
